The year ends...
2006. What a year. Eve slipped in to the last day last year, but we consider her a 2006 baby. We spent the first 2 ½ months in Albany with Tricia’s mom while we decided where we should look for a job. I had a few options in places like Phoenix, Austin and the like, but we decided to take the job in the Bay area. This was a very good decision. I work in a very challenging environment with very intelligent people.
The move to the San Francisco area wasn’t without it’s tribulations. We had lived in Portland for quite a while, although we returned from Australia/India after an unanticipated 5 years, we still had some really good friends there. In San Mateo, we knew no one and Anupam had a new job. The nice thing was that we had guests almost constantly for the first 6 months and Jai, Anupam's old buddy from Bombay was one of them. We had a lot of people visit us. Our parents, Jan, Ashutosh, Jai, just to name a few.
Tricia the busybody that she is, did not head to a swamp of nothingness and wallow at home. She went out there and joined the Mothers Clubs of our area. In a few days she made some good friends. Rachael, Christina and Monica are the people she meets most often. Tricia also became a sales consultant for a toy company called Discovery Toys. These are very good toys, albeit a little pricey. Well, you get what you pay for.
Eve has been growing in leaps in bounds. We almost don’t recognize that newborn baby anymore. She is a little toddler with boundless energy and enthusiasm. She loves hanging out with people and can babble all day. Trish taught her quite a bit of sign language and now she can sign for food, water, more, what, kitty among others. She is also learning new words. She can say baba (dad), mama/maba (mom), dida, kitty, what, up, night-night and her first couple of words hi and buh-bye. She spends a lot of time talking to her toys, books, chairs, table, vacuum cleaner and other inanimate objects. Yes, we think she’s very bright. YOU! Zip it!
The only issue that Eve has is her refusal to sleep. We spent months trying the best we could, we tried every technique in the book, checked out the box and thought out side. No love there. Over the last month or so, she has been sleeping in her own room. Trish feeds her, reads to her, sings to her, calms her down and puts her in her crib. We tried this when she was younger and she would yell for an hour or so before calming down and passing out with exhaustion, but this time she only protests for a couple of minutes and is out like a rock till 4am, when Trish gives her a quick feed. Eve is up at about 6:30am, the same time as me. She still refuses to take her afternoon nap, but we are hoping that, that improves over the next few weeks.
The highlights of this year?
The answer seems quite obvious at first glance. You’d think my answer would be Eve… well yes and no. This year Tricia and I have changed… nay, undergone a metamorphosis. We were a very well adjusted couple who were climbing the corporate ladder and threw humungous parties. Now, we are a well adjusted couple who are also proud parents of a one year old who is just a joy to be with. I have seen couples, parents and babies. What makes us unique? Well, at least in my opinion? This is one answer I keep close to my chest, just like my happy little family.
